On BBC Radio, Mariella Frostrup talks to Javier Marías on his latest novel Thus Bad Begins. First released in September 2014, it has been published in English by Penguin in February 2016, and translated by Margaret Jull Costa.
Most reviewers agree that this time Marías' undeniable and customary elegance perhaps has not had substance enough underneath to sustain it. Which still makes Thus Bad Begins, though, quite a good novel, and at the very least a stylistic pleasure.
